The Palamino Dry Fly
The Palomino Midge is a high-floating, delicate dry fly ideal for imitating midges or small mayflies on calm water. To fish it effectively, use light tackle—typically a 2- to 4-weight rod with a long, fine leader (5X to 7X tippet) to allow for a natural drift. Look for rising trout in slow-moving pools or flat sections of rivers, particularly in the morning or evening when midge hatches are most active.
Approach the water cautiously to avoid spooking fish. Position yourself downstream or across from the rise and make a gentle, accurate cast upstream, allowing the fly to drift naturally into the trout’s feeding lane. Avoid drag at all costs—any unnatural movement will likely be refused. A reach cast or using slack-line techniques like a parachute cast can help maintain a dead drift.
Watch the fly closely, as takes can be subtle. If the fish refuses the fly or rises nearby without taking, adjust your position or presentation rather than changing the fly immediately. When a trout rises and takes, resist striking too quickly—wait until the head turns down before gently lifting the rod. The Palomino Midge is especially effective on pressured or finicky trout due to its realistic profile and subtle presentation.
