Orange Cruncher Nymph traditional nymp pattern.
Nymph patterns represent immature insect forms which are water born and then hatch on or around the surface.
The big important thing here is to us, they are barely visible whilst fishing. To a hungry trout though, well they are to them what our favourite meal would be to us. Trout love to munch on nymphs. Pound for pound you will catch a greater deal more fish sub surface than you will on the top. Surface fun is a great way to sharpen your strike skills and hone your position casting and gentle landings. Surface fishing is far more heart pumping than sub surface fishing. Results will show time and time again, sub surface nymphing or wet fly fishing will provide more fish.
Nymphs are tiny creatures in the water so we always suggest fishing smaller patterns. Try not to think too much about the size though but rather try to match what is around the water in terms of fly. Our favoured method is to fish a nymph using a floating line. This is ideal to fish bead head nymphs, goldhead nymphs, weighted nymphs or just standard nymphs at variety of depths.
Some of the patterns that will provide excellent results. Pheasant tail nymph, Montana Nymphs, Black Martinez, Bloodworm Marabou etc. These will all provide excellent sport and will likely result in good fishing. Fishing a retrieve method which is slow generally will provide far greater results. If you are fishing a lure type nymph pattern then for sure a faster retrieve will work just as well.
Nymphs are very small and as such try to think just how they move in the water. Also try and think and how far they can move at any one time. Our own personal favourite is a jerky type retrieve which will replicate small jerked motions of the nymph as it travels through the depths of the water.
